Breadcrumbs of History
Selected works from the FAS Collection
By Paula Nascimento and Suzana Sousa
“Breadcrumbs of History – selected works from the FAS collection” is the most recent publication focused on the FAS Collection, by Paula Nascimento and Suzana Sousa with editorial coordination by Carolina Pelletier Fontes. The book launch, as part of the ARCO Forum - Millennium Art Talks, followed by a conversation moderated by curator Filipa Oliveira, aims to introduce the collection’s mission and its stories, coming from different geographies of the African continent and its diasporas.
The authors propose to analyse a group of 23 artists from the collection, for whom they created an approach based on the work “Papillon” by Abdoulaye Konaté. Without the intention of being commercialized, and with a limited edition of 500 copies, this book presents itself as an exhibition, through lines of thought that aim to establish relationships between the works and dividing the group of artists through their visual languages.
This publication also features an essay by Senegalese curator El Hadji Malick Ndiaye on the work of Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté, an introductory note by Mariana Champalimaud and Rui Horta e Costa (directors of the FAS Collection), and highlights the work of artists integrated in the collection such as Abdoulaye Konaté, Alexandra Karakashian, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Dawit L. Petros, Dimakatso Mathopa, Edson Chagas, Felix Shumba, Frida Orupabo, Grada Kilomba, Hank Willis Thomas, Helena Uambembe, Hicham Benohoud, Januário Jano, Joel Andrianomearisoa, Kiluanji Kia Henda , Mónica de Miranda, Mounir Fatmi, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Sandra Poulson, Teresa Kutala Firmino, Yinka Shonibare, Zanele Muholi and Zoulikha Bouabdellah.

FAS had the opportunity to present the book at Arco Lisboa, the result of a six month collaboration with the guest-curators Paula Nascimento and Suzana Sousa.
This publication will not be commercialized, since it promotes availability. The printed version will be spread across libraries, museums, research and educational centers around the world.
We would like to thank Arco Lisboa for this iniciative, as well as to Paula Nascimento for the great contribution and Filipa Olivera who accepted our invitation to moderate the talk around the book.
